Personalized Trip Planning

As the party leader, you will determine the tone and nature of the trip. Prior to looking over the maps, we will talk about the general focus (fishing, scenery, photography, etc.), the number of experienced canoeists in your group and the amount of traveling you have in mind. The importance of this service cannot be overemphasized. We will listen closely to what you tell us, because, among the many to choose from, there is likely one route best suited for your party.

Once your route is established, we mark it on waterproof maps with special attention given to campsites, waterfalls and fishing holes along the way. We then demonstrate the pitching of our tents and take a look at your other equipment and food supply. Our routing encompasses everything necessary in the way of advice and instruction...your party is special to us at Superior-North.

Rods: Spinning or spin casting rods are the all-around best choice for our area's walleye, bass, northern and lake trout. Fly rod? Bring it along.. use poppers or streamers and you can have a great time with small mouth bass.

Lures:  Bring your favorite tackle, but try to keep it compact... a few spoons, plugs, leaders, hooks and sinkers with a few jigs thrown should do it.  For your convenience, we have a tackle shop in our store.

Wilderness Travel Permit Information

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area and the Quetico Park are both on a quota system, so it is advisable to make early reservations. BWCA permits we acquire for you are sent to our base and will be issued to you upon arrival.  Quetico permits are picked up at the Cache Bay Ranger station. To reserve the permits for you, we will require a Visa or MasterCard number.
The BWCA is requiring a user fee of $16.00 per adult per trip and $8.00 for 17 years and under per trip.  In addition, a $12.00 non-refundable reservation fee is required per permit.  Quetico Park fees are $20.00 (Canadian funds) per night per adult and $10.00 (Canadian funds) per night per 17 & under plus a $12.00 (Canadian funds) reservation fee.
Group size is limited to 9 persons per permit in the BWCA & Quetico Park. A larger group needs additional permits. If you have a larger group, we will pack your groups separately.
If you are going into Canada but not in the Quetico Park, such as the Northern Light Lake area, Crown Land Camping permits are required. The camping fee is $10.00 (Canadian funds) per person per night. They are available at our Sag Lake Store and issued when you arrive at our base.
.
The Canadian Customs station is now closed on Saganaga Lake.  To enter Canada, you will have to apply for a Remote Area Border Crossing (RABC) permit through the Canadian Immigration.  The RABC permit allows the holder, his or her spouse and dependent children to enter on one permit.  That means a family can all get by with one RABC permit, but if you have a party of four adults, you will need four seperate permits. The cost is $30.00 (Canadian funds, about $22.00 U.S. funds) and it takes up to six weeks to process by mail, so plan to obtain this well in advance of departure.  Use a VISA or MasterCard.  Checks are NOT accepted.  You must provide proof of U.S. Citizenship such as a copy of your birth certificate.  A driver's license will work for the second form of identification.  The permit usually does not expire for a year.  If you applied for one last year and your trip this year is earlier in the season, check your expiration date.  To obtain a RABC application for or for more information, call the Thunder Bay office at (807) 624-2158.  We also have copies of the RABC if you prefer to get one from us.
